Choosing the right materials in product development

▶️ 𝗜𝗻 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹. 👉 When developing a product, the first priority is to ensure that the product performs its function, which must also be considered when selecting the material. This is because it must be ensured that the product will adequately 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀 to which it is subjected during its service life.

When selecting the appropriate materials, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 by which the product will be 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 must also be taken into account. This may be forming, welding, machining, surface protection, or other manufacturing technologies. In all of this, care must be taken to keep 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 of the product as low as possible.

In the automotive industry, 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 #steels, and advanced #aluminium materials are the preferred materials, while 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 where stiffness is more important than strength, more basic materials can also be incorporated.
